MEET THE DIRECTOR

Real talk: I used to HATE having my photo taken. Like hid from the camera kind of hate. Ruined the mood because I refused to be photographed kind of hate.
And honestly, in the wrong context I still do! It felt like a performance. The way I was told to smile at Christmas dinner after the family had been arguing for the past hour. When I was told to cuddle up to family members I barely knew for a photo. The countless times I was told to dress up and smile, even though I was feeling anything but happy.
And honestly, that's a big part of why I became a photographer. I never want you to feel forced into a performance. For me, photos capture memories and the feelings that go along with those memories. Photography in its truest form is art that honours presence over performance. It's how we remember our best moments for years to come. It's the best way we have to share moments and stories with those who couldn't be there. It is the art of visual storytelling.

If you're not feeling something you want to remember, then why would you want to capture that moment, really? That's why I make sure I allow every human I photograph to be present in the moment, to soak it all in. Because that's what it's all about. You get to live your special moments, and just leave it to me to make sure you never forget how it felt. I guess you could say that's my why.
xo,
Em
